Learning how to navigate in the mountains needn’t be dull. It gives you access to the remote areas, far away from the beaten track, and enables you to head out in whatever the weather. That’s quite a bonus in the Lake District, where we get a drop of rain from time to time!
Now the days are lengthening, more people are keen to get out into the mountains, and we’ve had a few enquiries about our Lake District Navigation Weekend courses (click for itinerary), which cost just Β£99 per person, with dates still available in May and June.
In terms of the skills learnt, we aim to teach you the following navigational tools and techniques over the weekend; Use of compass and bearings, Setting the map & scales, Aiming off techniques, Pacing and timing methods, Navigating without a compass , Route planning from the map, Contour interpretation methods, Search methods if lost, Aspect of slope measurements, Use of the GPS & limitations, Re-section for location, Orienteering skills & training.
These weekends offer great value, and involve a fun two days in the fells. Get in touch if you’d like to book a space, or drop in to our Windermere office to discuss your plans. Here we also stock a range of maps, cases and compasses (click to view), as well as trekking poles, rucksacks and other essentials for the fells.
