Mont Blanc solstice

While the political world is in meltdown, we are retreating into the ‘simplicity’ of the mountains, and this blog (today at least) is a referendum free zone! A huge congratulations to our teams on Mont Blanc yesterday. These photos were shared by Trevor and Rachel, and in the photo above, they are pictured on the summit with their guide Gilles, with the enormous shadow of Mont Blanc stretching out to the left. The teams benefitted from the longest hours of light, making the ascent in the week of the summer solstice.

The guides reported perfect conditions on the route, with no rockfall at all on the Gouter Couloir, due to the good snow cover. Starting from the Gouter hut, the highest on the mountain, was essential with the high valley temperatures, to ensure the best overnight refreeze. On the descent to Tete Rousse, after their successful ascent, they reported very soft slushy snow conditions. The photo above shows the Vallot shelter at dawn, with some climbers stopping for a rest, and the picture below is of a team taking the final steps to the top.
